History in West Africa

With a university, mosques and over a hundred schools Timbuktu was a cultural center. in the 1500's the demand in the Europe's American colonies changed the relation. West Africa societies are very diverse. There are three main influences: traditional African culture and Islam. There were a lot of different ethnic groups. Country borders sometimes separated members of the same ethnic group. Traditionally, religion of West Africa has often been forms of animism. The most two common religions were Islamic and Christianity. West Africans wore a mix of traditional and modern style clothing. Rural homes were built out of mud, straw, brick or tin. However, in cities in West Africa people may live in apartments or houses.

SQ3R West Africa

Nigeria has Africa's largest population. One ethnic group tried to break away from the main country. Nigeria is not a democratic country after years of military ruling. Oil is 95 percent of the country's export earnings. Causes for Nigerians being poor: high birthrate, cant produce enough food and history of bad government. Liberia is Africa's oldest republic. They export ruby and iron ore.

Summary of Reading

Today in humanities, Mr. Coyle asked us to SQ3R a reading about the Physical Geography of Western Africa. Western Africa has plains, highlands and one of its greatest accents the Niger River. The Niger River gives life to plants and the soil around it, it also transports people during the rainy seasons and allows people to fish. West Africa has four different climate regions, humid tropical, tropical savanna, desert and steppe. West Africa has a variety of rescoureces including oil, minerals, cacao, cocnuts, peanuts and coffee.

Can You Trust Julius Lester???

To me it doesn't really matter. Because even if he made up all the stories he would have still made his point about slaves. It's not like you can go ask these slaves, "Did Julius Lester really interview you???". Not only are they dead but they wouldn't even know what your talking about...! But to everyone in the class i think this book touched them deeply and it was like we felt the slaves pain not only because they were beaten up but people thought that just because they werent christen they were less human.

5 Themes of Geography

http://www.traveljournals.net/pictures/l/4/48593-anjuna-market-benaulim-india.jpg

This is a picture of an Indian Market.
The Movement is how the jewelry got there, maybe through train or bicycle. Region is India. Human Environmental is the houses in the far background and building the roofs to protect them from the hot Indian sun shine. Place is the musty, stale smell in the air of India, the wide range of race. The colors of the jewelry.

Violance Leads to More Violance

I disagree with this quote because when Brutus had an issue with Caesar and ended up killing him (Act 3), Caesar was dead. So, no one left to fight with, so the problem was solved.

When two countries are in war and one country kills everyone in the other country there is no one else to fight with so that war is finished. Its not like another totally different country is going to come in and fight the country that won.

Conflict Between Friend and Country

The dilemma that Brutus faces is between his friend, Caesar, or the good of his country, Rome. If Brutus chooses Caesar he lose the trust of his country and someone would probably kill him. But if he chooses Rome, he looses a great friend and becomes the ruler of Rome. Caesar dies anyway so if i were in Brutus's place i would choose Rome because he would have power and victory. He will make friends along the way and most of the time enemies. Life does not end when you loose one friend, move on with your life and learn your lesson from it.

Leaders Among Us!!

I think that a good leader should be someone who:
  • takes control
  • listens to other people's suggestions
  • organized
  • responsible
  • has fun but knows the limit
  • is not selfish
  • knows that the decision he/she makes affects the people who work for them.
Aysha is a great leader in the school, she fits all of my characteristics. I am proud of her!!!
She takes control when their is no leader and always lets people give their input. Aysha has fun but when its time to be serious, she gets down and dirty!

Case Studies in Imperialism

Motivations:
Resources, land and the power of who go's through the Sues Canal was some of the gold. The glory was land and power. There were no gods because religion was not an issue in this situation.

Methods:
The methods that the British used was to use the Sues Canal as a way of taking over Egypt and other countries. Another method was states frighting and war. A British company signed an agreement with the Persian rulers to develop oil fields.

Changes:
The Persians rebelled against their ruler - who was corrupt- and the growing influence of the Europeans. In Persia, Russians and the British competed for control of local power. Britain controlled Egypt after they had money troubles and could not complete the Sues Canal.

Reflection for Goals!!

My goal for quarter 1 was to read more and to read higher level books. During the quarter, I managed to achieve the goal of reading more and by the end of the quarter I was reading a book my mum and dad recommended to me. It's called Master of the Game and If Tomorrow Comes both by Sidney Sheldon. They are mystery books and have great adventures in them. Time flies when I read these books, so they must be great books to read.

My new goals for quarter 2 are:
1) To get a B in humanities.
2) To get all my TMTU's in one lesson.
3) To do my homework the night it was given.

Political Cartoon

Main Visual Elements are a fat man with a capitalism banner, a little man and money falling out of the little man's pockets. Capitalism steals money from the working people. The cartoonists opinion is when the government uses capitalism they are taking money away from the laborers. The way the fat man is shaking the money out of the little man shows how the author feels. Putting a grim smile on the fat mans face might have been more persuasive.

Mr. Coyle’s Investment Tips

Buy Low, Sell High:

The main meaning of the quote: Buy low, sell high, is to buy shares or shocks when they are at a cheap prize and as soon as the market increases sell you shares at the highest price possible. Spend a little and sell a lot!!

Industrial Revolution

What is the “net effect” of the Industrial Revolution?

Pros:
1) The revolution in textiles such as the spinning jenny, the water mule and the sewing machines resulted in faster production, better trade, slave plantation and fashion started.
2) It changed the way people lived, instead of there being lords and kings, we now have proper governments and presidents.
3) We would not have entertainment and machinery, people would have very little education.
4) The transportation now is cars and bikes, before the industrial revolution we would be riding horses and wagons.

Cons:
1) Pollution has increased rapidly over the past century.
2) Assembly lines and sweatshops are still being used till today.
3)The revolution in coal, mines and scheduled work resulted in the making of more machines, more pollution, it did bring in more money but caused women and children to work long hours.
4)In factories, the quality of production grew less because the items were being made from machines and not home made.

Factory Game Part 2 Picture

prohater.files.wordpress.com/.../spider-pig.jpg

Factory Game Reflection

Revising the words before we did the factory game part 2, was a genius idea because most of the words we put into action. Like the assembly line. It was really unfair to the manager of the operation because they automatically fail a quiz (which sucks because I was the manager)! But throughout the period my team worked well and did as they were told, one of the reasons being that anyone who disobeyed me, I could fire. We made a lot of piggies but non of them could replace the pig I made, mostly because non of them looked like the pig i made.

It was a fun activity and I hope to do more of them in the future. Go piggy, go piggy!!!

Factory Game Feedback - Piggy

The Factory Game was a fun idea. We got to think creatively but still use a limited amount of resources. I still think we could have had a longer time to do the activity. Some people really went out of heir way to do this activity but in the end it all paid off.

Roller Coaster Extreme

We were waiting in line to board one of the fastest roller coaster rides in Malaysia. We walked over to our seats and sat there waiting with anticipation. My dad told me to fasten the silver buckle that stood dangling next to my shoulder. Slowly we started moving, my hands began to sweat, i could hear my heart beating in my ears. "WOWOWOWOWOWO," screamed the people behind and in front of us. As we moved higher and higher to the apex of the track. My heart pounded more then ever. Mu hands were shaking, but the only think that kept me calm was the aroma of hot dogs and french fries. I took one last breathe. With a blink of an eye we dropped!

Mother Necessity "Where wouldwe be....?"

http://www.dbaol.com/images/tactics/chariot1x1.jpg

Necessity is the mother of invention means that need gives birth to invention. When one person needs something, another person will create it.

1) When the mother asked her son, "Elias, can you help me with my sewing?" He said that when he was older that he would fulfill his mother's fondest wishes. And when he grow up he invented the sewing machine.

2) Another example, is when Little Tomas Alva Edison said, "I'll grow up to be a great inventor and I'll make a lamp to help my mommy see." And when he grew up he invented electricity.

3) The last example is, when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone so that his mother could phone her friends instead of sending him on a horse.

How do I learn best????? :)

Well, the best way i learn is when you explain it to me in words then I practice doing it myself. Then, I can explain it and also do it. Also playing games and fun activities are also a great way for me to learn and always CANDY!!! Give me a piece of candy every time I get to known an activity. Making the classroom fun and each lesson exciting is a great start. But the best way to make to make it fun is with CANDY!!! And please please don't talk a lot, because then we don't play any attention! But I love my humanities class and the people in it!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

First Weeks of 8th grade!! Holy Moly!!

The first week of school was so awesome!! But two things I liked the most was getting to see all my friends after 2 whole months, and the second thing was that, my classmates and I get to rule Middle School. My first impression of Humanities was, "OH MY GOD, I HAVE MR. COYLE!!" I am pretty good at Humanities but i would like my English to get better and for me to read a whole lot more. Over the summer i read three and a half books but I know I could have done better. I am really trying to make this the best 8th grade ever!!

My Gang Hommie Members

Whenever my gang is together there is never a silent moment, we are all laughing and talking and the occasional singing (performed by sami).

Where do i start, my closest friends have to be Lilli and Samiyah. Lilli is mostly the intelligent one in the group and sami is like me, the crazy one who never stops talking!! Then we have Tasha, Noa, Emily, Sarah, Sachi, Nandu, Tara, Shin, Viv, Mia, Lydia, Mckenna, Izzy, Shri, Alex.K., Ro, Seb, and the list goes on... I love my friends and they love me!!!

I do have friends in South Africa who i saw over the summer holidays. There's Tareeka who is the one who never acts crazy and Sanam (aka slimy eggs on toast) who acts the weirdest of the lot. We all love shopping and dressong up and just chilling on the beach, sipping coke and relaxing.

Then we have friends of my parents. My mom and dad's closest friends have kids that are in AES. Well, one of them are in Middle School. His name is Moosa and he is just the freaky one! He has a smaller sister named Faaiza who is most intelligent Elementary student that i have ever met. She is a book worm which explains a lot! Whenever we go out together, we always have fun but act our ages (only when our parents are in the room).
